Extracts from the NEC for the Commercial Sectors of Zimbabwe regulations:

 

ORDINARY HOURS - Section 5

- 48 hours per week for selected employees (max 12 hours in any 24 hour period)

- 45 hours per week for all other employees (max 9 hours in any 24 hour period)

 

CONVERSION RATES - Section 6

Monthly rate converted to Weekly = Monthly Rate/ 4.3333

Fortnightly = Weekly rate * 2

Hourly = Weekly Rate/ Ordinary hours (45 or 48)

Daily = Monthly Rate/ 22 or 26 for 5 and 6 day weeks respectively

 

OVERTIME - Section 7

- Not obligatory - an employer may request, but not require, an employee to work overtime

- Rate - 1.5 - (time and a half) - for work done on a normal working day

- Rate - 2.0 - (double time) - for work done on an off day

Times rounded upwards - any time above 1/4 hour to the nearest 1/2 hour

 

TIME AND WAGES RECORDS - Section 11

Every employer shall keep a record of all employees showing the following:

a) Name in full and ID particulars

b) Occupation and grade

c) Number of daily hours worked

d) Rate of wage or salary

e) Amount due for ordinary time sorked

f) Hours of overtime worked

g) Amount due for overtime

h) Gross total of ordinary and overtime wage or salary

i) Deductions (sprecify)

j) Net wage or salary due

k) Signature of employee for receipt of wage or salary where it is paid in cash

 

GRATUITIES

According to Section 31 of the NEC for the Commercial  Sectors of Zimbabwe regulations employees, who have completed ten (10) or more years of continuous service, are entitled to receive a once off payment of gratuity if they, leave the employ of the organization, or die. This amount may be reduced if the employer has been contributing amounts, over and above the contributions of the employee to a pension scheme.

 

The amount of the gratuity is calculated by multiplying the percentage, given in the table below, by the number of completed years of continuous service.

 

The percentages to be applied are as follows:
