the screening at Department of Social Development offices. We also assisted young people who were rejected when they applied for the special COVID-19 Social Relief of Distress grant of R350 per month. Some young people lacked data, so we assisted with our Wi-Fi, so that they could apply.
supporT neTworks during covid-19
SCAT provided us with a laptop, modem and cellphone, as well as 10 GB of data. This allowed us to continue working from home during lockdown and connect by WhatsApp with the community. SCAT also provided us with Zoom training on counselling and gender-based violence.
We have been supported by the Departments of Health and a Community Development Practitioner from the DSD. Our board members always checked whether we were okay, and ensured we were cautious and stayed at home if we did not feel good. We have volunteers from the community who know the work we are doing, who would come to the office and check whether we needed anything.
lessons from working during The covid-19 pandemic
I’ve learnt that one never knows what will happen tomorrow and we should always be prepared to adapt to changes. Before, we talked about the fourth industrial revolution, but we never knew we would be training through Zoom. Through the advice office, we needed to see whether the basic needs of the community were met. People didn’t have access to water or electricity, but we managed to engage with the municipality to assist. We have attracted funders, such as the Lesedi Trust, which we didn’t have before. We are not yet there, but we are trying to serve our community with dignit
