Tyinira Food distribution
projecTs and programmes in response To The covid-19 pandemic
Fortunately, with the help of SCAT, we were able to distribute food parcels to help feed those who were most in need. We distributed 250 food parcels in Idutywa, Willowvale and Xhora, and 25 food parcels in Zazela, Magodla, Ntshatshongo, Tyinira, Ndabakazi, Nqileni, Mkiva and Mekeni.
We also paid a visit to a centre for the mentally challenged in Ndabakazi, providing breakfast and lunch, and distributing personal protective equipment [PPE]. In addition, we provided 100 PPEs for learners at Jongibandla Junior Secondary School.
supporT neTworks during covid
SCAT supported us by providing funds for food parcels and PPE. They also provided us with a laptop, cellphone, modem and data. We received a donation of 25 food parcels from a local community member, Mr Mabentsela. We also worked very closely with staff in the municipal manager’s office, and with traditional leaders, the police, ward councillors, the Department of Social Development, and church leaders. The Daily Dispatch newspaper and Umhlobo Wenene radio station helped us with spreading information about our projects and informing the public about COVID-19 prevention measures.
lessons from working during The covid-19 pandemic
Three-quarters of community members were impacted by hunger, and very few people could cope. This was a disaster. We also learnt that people can be stubborn. They wanted to continue attending church services, social gatherings, and funeral services. Getting them to give that all up for each other’s safety was a big deal.
